Recording and Treatment of Titration Data

The data from a typical titration is recorded as given below. Here, titration of sodium hydroxide solution versus 0.1 M HCl is taken as example for illustration

Solution in burette                  0.1 M HCl

Solution in flask                      NaOH (aq)

Volume of                               25 cm3

Indicator                                 Phenolphthalein

End point                                Pink to colourless

Chemical equation

NaOH (aq) + HCl (aq) à7 NaCl (aq) + H2O (l)

OBSERVATIONS

Initial reading                              Final reading                                      Volume of the

of the burette                              of the burette                                         acid used

(cm3)

1.00                                                     20.50                                                   19.50

3.50                                                     22.65                                                   19.15

5.00                                                     24.10                                                   19.10

4.00                                                     23.10                                                   19.10

4.00                                                     23.05                                                   19.05

The last four titre values are consistent. The average of consistent titre values

= 19.15 + 19.10 + 19.10 + 19.05 / 4

= 19.10 cm3
